Site Conservation Within Common Area Open Space

The site plan for Harvest Hill and The Orchard is the product of endeavoring to minimize site disturbance by clustering and reducing the size of lots so that the total amount of undisturbed common area open space is increased. This increase in undisturbed and minimally disturbed open space facilitates preservation of both wildlife corridors and woodlands and reduces the level of stormwater run-off otherwise associated with residential land use. At the same time The Orchard’s landscape master plan for common areas already has resulted in planting in the community’s first phase over 400 flowering fruit trees. The resulting “orchard” landscape form serves as ideal habitat for song birds, while at the same time establishing the distinctive landscaping mass from which the community takes its name and identity.
